Back Pain – How We Tackle a Common Problem with an Uncommon Solution
Back pain, particularly lower back pain, is perhaps the number one cause of sick days and loss of man hours in the UK economy. It is becoming more and more prevalent during these modern times, especially given how more sedentary our lives are becoming.
Certain occupations can also contribute to back pain such as construction, warehouse work or anything that requires frequent stooping, bending and heavy lifting. The problem is not necessarily the activities however. Often we have found that pre-existing injuries that may have been long forgotten about are to blame.
These injuries can come in the form of a bump or fall during young age that are often thought of as trivial, or something more serious such as a car accident. These injuries will cause a misalignment in the way your bones are arranged, particularly in the spine and other weight bearing bones. When your body cannot self-correct these misalignments it collapses forward.
This forward collapse puts greater stress and demand on your body’s joints and muscles as well as your central nervous system to prevent you from falling over. This increased stress and overworking muscles is the source of your back problems. There is also the issue of how the nerves and nervous system are affected but we cover this in another post.
Prolonged stooping, bending and heavy lifting is obviously not helping back pain but you can easily cope with this if your frame was properly aligned. Although extreme in its example imagine how much better and smoother the bike pictured would ride if it wasn’t so bent and buckled. Something similar is going on in your back but not to such an obvious extent.
Because your spine is made up of many individual bones working together, misalignments, even very small ones, will cause the curvature in your spine to become jaggedy and crooked, resulting in pain and poor function.
The pre-existing injuries you thought had gotten better didn’t. Your body merely found a way to work around them and protect those areas by creating a compensation pattern. These build up over time so when you get to a point where you can no longer compensate well enough your back will give out for instance. That lift or whatever it may be that you thought was the reason was simply one of several injuries that collectively contributed to your breakdown.
Of course you could just treat the affected area of the back pain with massage or something of that nature to alleviate pressure or inflammation but this is merely like taking a paracetamol tablet for the pain. The pain does not go away when you have the tablet. The chemicals simply dull or shut off pain receptors in your brain so it doesn’t communicate to you that you have pain. Similarly, massage will help reduce tension in the back muscles but it won’t address the reason why those muscles got so tense and inflamed in the first place.
Here at Body Centric Wellness we do what some consider unconventional; we address the root cause for overworked and tense muscles – misaligned bones. This is different from what chiropractors and other professionals are doing. They generally aim to loosen up the joints with manipulations and give you exercises to make you get better at holding up your own body. This is the wrong approach and does not correct the underlying problem – which is the fact that your body is collapsing under gravity due to a crooked frame.
When treated with the ABC™ protocol we correct the misalignments your body could not by itself correct. As we do so it immediately straightens up without effort removing the stress and tension from your overworked muscles and providing relief from back pain. We eliminate the need for stretches, exercise or massage. Obviously the more crooked and injured your frame the more care you will need.
